I loved reading your thoughts & memories. I grew up in DC, went to high school 2 blocks from the capitol at the Academy of Notre Dame and my senior yr "problems of democracy" class was spent walking up No capital st to the "Fullbright hearings" at the capitol. I became slightly more political at the death of JFK and was one of the many who as a sophmore in HS, stood and walked in the line all night long to pass by his casket. Would love to have been in one of your classes and I'm sure that you are leaving a void at Rutgers with your retirement! Great to speak with you.

Great cartoon, Charles.

Makes you wonder where the line between being forgiving and blaming lies for Obama.

Charles, not to be rude, but make sure to change the article to Separate Is Not Equal. Also, I agree with you that the government should not prevent gay couples from marrying. But, the government being involved in the process of marriage at all is truly silly. If there is a church, (I believe the Episcopal Church allows it) which chooses to marry gay couples, by all means that should be allowed. The left is supposed to stand for social freedoms, yet, they seem to demand government action in places where they have no jurisdiction, or shouldn't. Ron Paul challenges George Bush for doing a similar thing, http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul151.html, bringing more government into marriage at the expense of the taxpayer. I think we would be better off without the government making these "moral" decisions for the American citizens, and keeping their hands out of a beautiful thing, instead of bureaucraticizing it.

This is a great interview. I had no idea that Rutgers students had protested the Vietnam War by sitting on the train tracks at the New Brunswick station!

Professor Schochet has been an institution at the University and he will be missed. I'd also like to say that he did a tremendous job moderating the Spring '09 debate between the RU Democrats and College Republicans.

This was a really good article. I think it's especially apt in light of President Obama's recent remarks in Prague about nuclear nonproliferation and his speech in Turkey about America's relationship with Islam.
